I've been running charters in the Bahamas for over 20 years. I've owned aluminum boats, deep-V fiberglass hulls, and several inflatables. Three months ago, I took delivery of the 800cm fiberglass RIB from Colton Boat Company. The Bahamas is shallow—endless sandbars, turtle grass, and coral heads. An 8-meter RIB is small enough to skim across 2 feet of water with the engine trimmed up, yet big enough to carry 10 passengers plus coolers, snorkel gear, and a full day of supplies to the outer cays. Fiberglass Hull Performance in Bahamian Waters:
I was hesitant about fiberglass at first—I've seen too many gelcoat scratches from our sharp limestone beaches. But Colton's layup is THICK. The hull has a solid, heavy feel that slices through the famous "Bahamian chop" (those steep 2-3 foot wind waves) without slamming. The deep-V entry softens the ride tremendously. My elderly clients no longer complain about back pain after crossing Exuma Sound.
Speed & Stability:
With a single 150HP outboard, we cruise at 28 knots and top out at 38 knots. The RIB tubes provide incredible lateral stability. When we stop to feed the pigs or swim with the nurse sharks, everyone can move to one side for photos without the boat feeling tippy. The inflatable collars also act as perfect bumpers when rafting up with other boats at the Sandbar.
Durability in the Marine Environment:
The Bahamas eats boats. Sun, salt, wind, and constant beaching. After 3 months of daily use (including dragging the bow onto rocky shores at Staniel Cay), the fiberglass has only minor scratches. The hypalon tubes have held up perfectly against UV—no fading, no leaks. Colton clearly uses top-grade materials. The stainless steel fittings still look brand new after constant saltwater dunking.
What I appreciate most:
Shallow water capability: The 800cm planes quickly and runs skinny. I can get within 50 feet of any beach.
Dry ride: The flared bow keeps spray down. My passengers stay dry even in a 15-knot crosswind.
Easy to clean: Seats are removable, deck is self-bailing. A quick hose-down after each trip and she's ready for the next day.
Towable: Light enough to tow behind my pickup truck. I launch from different ramps across the island without a headache.
Family layout: The bench seating with backrests is comfortable for long days. My kids love sitting on the bow cushion during slow cruises.
One small suggestion:
Please add more stainless cup holders from the factory. We like our rum punch in the Bahamas! But honestly, that's an easy fix.
How it compares:
I've run AB, Highfield, and Zodiac RIBs. The Colton 800cm fiberglass is every bit as good at 60% of the price. The hull warranty (5 years) gave me confidence. And your US-based parts support means I'm never stranded.
Final word to other Bahamian operators:
If you run tours in Nassau, Exuma, Abaco, or anywhere in between—stop overpaying for European brands. Colton builds a serious RIB for real money. The 800cm fiberglass model is tough, stable, and a crowd-pleaser. My guests constantly comment on how "new and clean" the boat looks. That means repeat bookings.
