As a South American operator running expeditions from Ushuaia into the Antarctic Peninsula, we put our equipment through absolute hell—saltwater, brash ice, sub-zero temperatures, and the constant scraping against volcanic rock and glacial moraines. Over the past two seasons, we have purchased four units of the 520cm aluminum rib boat from Colton Boat Company. Frankly, they have exceeded every expectation.

Performance in Antarctica:
These boats are not just "good"; they are exceptional. The 5.20m length hits the sweet spot—compact enough to crane-launch from our mothership, yet stable enough to handle the notorious Williwaw winds and sudden 3-meter southern ocean swells. The aluminum hull is a game-changer. Unlike PVC or Hypalon ribs that get shredded by razor-sharp ice edges, the aluminum plates shrug off the impact. • Thermal Performance: In -15°C conditions, the aluminum doesn't become brittle. The boat starts instantly and tracks straight even when loaded with 6 passengers + 200kg of camera gear.

• Weight & Portability: We were initially worried about aluminum being heavier than inflatables, but the 520cm model is surprisingly light. Our Zodiac-style davit handles it with ease.

• Deck Layout: Colton’s self-draining deck and raised bow are lifesavers. When taking green water over the bow in the Lemaire Channel, the water drains in seconds.
